Birtwisle family in Cheshire 1650-2002
My interest in the the BIRTWISLE family in Cheshire from around 1650 with a Richard Birtwisle having a daughter Mary baptised at Whitegate in 1655. Many of the early Birtwisle family aree buried in theWhitegate and Weaverham parishes.
All the Birtwisle family in Cheshire originate from the same family regardles of how they spell their name now.The older members of the family like to argue over which is the correct way to spell it but the truth is that in the "olden" days when people couldn't read anyway the name was spelled in all sorts of ways.
I have a list of 112 different spellings and variations of the name.
The two main ways in Cheshire now are:-
Birtwisle and BirtwisTle.
My line are from Thomas Robinson BRTWISLE and Mary Jane Creswell in Northwich he was a draper born 1842 Castle youngest son of Samuel and Mary BIRTWISLE a grocer.
Samuel moved to Castle from Gorstage around 1826 and set up a beerhouse and grocers shop at the top of Castle Hill in the premises which is now an Art Shop at no. 47Castle Street and he is listed in various trade directories of the time.
There are two main lines left in Northwich now.
My family line from Thomas and Mary Janes descendants and another line from Thomas and Jane Birtwisle a blacksmith whose line comes down to the earlier garage family and the still thriving butchers family.
I would like to hear from anybody interested in the family and anybody with an interest of earlier records of any Birtwisle that possibly originated in another County from before 1650.
