Re: The Source and meaning of the Name
My grandmother was Augusta Bjorkegren from Blackstad parish in Smaland in Sweden. The name is Swedish and means birchbranch. There is some 6 to 10 Swedish families with this name, the oldest dating back to the 17th century. Normally the name has been picked up by somebody at one time coming from a place or parish called Bjorke (birchplace), Bjorklinge (about the same) or in at least one case after a person called Bjorck (birch). So it simply means they have branched out from such a place or person. There is one such family in Finland, originally from Sweden. From which area in Sweden does your ancestor come from? With the name Olaus Bjorkegren my guess is Vastergotland.
