A J, Contact me off group at firstname.lastname@example.org as feel that a lot of the current information floating around on the Harrell line is based not on facts but on assumptions. Also as new information is found on the family there is room for errors in older family history simply due to lack of accurate or all of the information on hand. Also many of the early assumptions were designed to gain membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution at a time when mixed marriages were not proper for DAR membership and also when half breeds were treated as bad as their non white half were in a time when Native Americans were no better off than Black Slaves in this country to the White folks wanting more land to settle on and get rich off of.
I'd heard that Sarah Peacock was the spouse of Jacob Harrell 1734-1787 (one with will in Charleston) but in fact this based on another Jacob Harrell that lived beyond 1787 in the same general area as Jacob Harrell of St John Parish SC with home on Washmsaw (Wassamassaw is correct current spelling of this) Swamp when he died per his will). As this other Jacob Harrell held land in Darlington District of SC or what was then Craven County SC (not to be confused with now Craven County NC as early on all of northern area of SC border with NC was called Craven while Berkeley the middle area and Colleton the southern area and current county names came from Precints or Districts in these main three area of SC as they slice the state or colony).
Also Leacy Harrell Barfield wed a Charles Barfield as have several documents supporting this from SC Archives.Main one indicates Charles Barfield and Silas Simmons served with a John Harrell in the same unit in Revolutionary War as they all signed a petition to end their service and that part of the unit be allowed to go home.Have seen the actual document and only 78 names readable on it and didn't see other Barfields or Simmons or Harrell on it that could read..This unit served around the SC NC line as Craven SC and Mecklinburg NC and Cheraw SC mentioned in the petition and some of the other names seen in it show up on deeds and other documents naming Jacob Harrell, Levi Harrell, and others which are possible relations. Not sure who John Harrell is but have two possibles with most likely being John Harrell of Wayne County North Carolina filed will Darlington District (another part of old Craven County SC) in 1793 and since it indicates it recorded in 1803 assume he died by then and this when it proved.
Anyway have followed this line down and due to not being able to find solid documents to back certain things can't confirm current way family tree is formed.
Examples of problems: 1) Francis Harrell will Bertie Precinct (then a part of larger Chowen County NC) filed 1759 and proved 1763 indicates his wife was a Mary. Also indicates he had son John and Jacob as well as others but these the hardest to follow down. 2) Francis Harrell estate testate Johnston County NC 1804 is said to have left widow MRS SARAH COLE harrell behind him who in 1807 left a will in Johnston County NC indicating her children as Levey Asey JACOBe Francis William and JOHN (note again Jacob and John here. Also shows he had son Francis who could have died young and well been the Francis left will in 1759/63 and the Francis indicated in an elder widow MRS SARAH COLE harrell having no living natural children left each of her grandsons five shillings.Anyway wording in her will indicates more like 'her children' weren't natural as her natural son Jacob died in 1787 and Francis in 1759 and others before her and even her spouse the senior Francis died by 1804.
Since lack birth dates to give proper ages for these above two Francis can only assume the one died by 1763 was elder of the two since other died 1804 but with no solid proof can't even say they father and son... let alone who died the elder of the other. since lack birth dates..
Now for the John Harrell have two possible here: 1) John Sr of Wayne County NC but filed will 1793 in Darlington District SC as it was recorded there in 1803..Indicates his wife was an Elizabeth and he had three sons Elisha (an adult since chosen exuc to will in 1793), John Jr (also chosen exuc of will in 1793 and have used the Jr and Sr myself to keep them separated as will only shows them as John..) 2) John of Darlington District SC eastate papers filed by Sarah Harrell and Asa Harrell in 1834.Assume he is the John Jr thus son of John Sr above but nothing to verify him such so he is a second John could be the son of anyone...He has several sons as well as daughters indicated in his estate papers.
Also have in Jacob will of 1787 he indicates a son as Lewis: 1) Lewis Harrell of Darlington District SC will filed 1822 and proved 1823 indicates his wife is Melissa and he has three daughter Mary, Ann, and Elizabeth. Also indicates Melissa is expecting a child most say is a son named Lewis born just before or after death of father in 1823.Will note here that in this will for him it is indicated that he owned lands in both Darlington and Marion County SC or what was then part of Craven County SC. 2) Lewis Harrell of Marion District SC left estate in testate and Sarah Harrell and Asa Harrell named as execs to estate in it.
Anyway you probably starting to notice how things can get confused as to which persons to put where in the family jungle.
Also going back up and noting MRS SARAH COLE harrell became a widow in 1804 and is you've seen the information on Levi Harrell RS 1750-1806 son of Jacob as currently being passed around you might pick up on this:
Levi Harrell RS wed twice MRS COLE and MISS WHITE based on Burch Harrell Allied Family by Marilu Smallwood who got her information from DAR records. Smallwood in her original printing of the text indicates she had never found marriage records on Levi RS but simply used DAR information to come up with what she had. Also she indicates not able to find first names on his wives but assumes the following: Mrs Cole was born about 1756 probably in Albermale because that was where prominant Coles lived at this time and he wed Miss White after 1804...Note here MRS COLE and 1804 then go back and look at when Francis Harrell of Johnston County NC died and left his widow around.Believe that Levi Harrell RS grew up living close to the Harrell of Johnston County NC as they were either his grand parents or uncle and aunt.Anyway figure that he sent his family to NC from SC during American Revolution to stay in a safer area than in Wassamasaw Swamp (204 acrs of land and home left Levi Harrell (16 Sep 1777) grandson of Jacob in will of 1787 which Jacob son Levi Harrell RS (1750-1806) was exuctor of)..
Anyway this starting to get long so will cut here. But I hope you can see how much of a jungle this family is from early on..as too many names common lived in same general areas at same time... and only have solid documents to show deaths and nothing to show births or marriages or even confirm parent and child...
