Still looking for solid documents to verify who Mary Harrell may have wed prior to 1787 in the Black family line.
So far have found a will on Jacob Harrell of Saint Johns Parish in Berkeley County South Carolina hold 204 acres on Wassamassaw Swamp that indicates his children as follows
Levi Harrell -- probably son choice as exeuctor to will in 1787 and thus appointed a month later in 1787.
Leacy Barfield -- found to be the wife of Charles Barfield who can be found holding lands in the same area and also serving with John Timmons, Silas Simmons and a John Harrell in the Upper Craven Militia.John Harrell is either a brother to Jacob or a nephew as there are at least two or more John Harrell could fit in here by age.
Selah Simmons -- is a witness to the will made her mark and also has been found to be wife of Silas Simmons who was a second choice to be exeuctor to will but not appointed such.Silas will filed in 1795 in Charleston SC where Jacob will was filed was taken in by Charles Lining who also took in Silas will.
Ann(a) Timmons -- is the right name on the will not Simmons as somebody marked over the T on the typed public copy of the document and changed it to an S but on the original hand document it's clearly a T(immons).Believe she wed a John Timmons found serving in Upper Craven Militia with Silas Simmons, Charles Barfield and John Harrell and since many names on the found petition not readable can't say who else might have been in the unit serving around Anson Mecklingburg NC areas down in now Darlington SC area or old Craven County SC area probably between 1771 and the end of American Revolution as the document date is not clear and has been assumed to be before or during American Revolution.
Mary Black -- is the one need some information on as possible she wed a James Black named in land records in the common area with other names found on the Upper Craven petition as well as individual land records on those named.
Martha Curtis -- so far have found little on her and who she might have wed..But believe the Martha as a first name helps link Jacob Back to an uncle Thomas Harrell of Nansemond VA who by 1802 had wed a Martha as believe this puts Jacob father as Francis Harrell wed Mary left will Bertie NC 1759/63 who was thus the son of Thomas Harrell, SR sold land in Suffolk VA (old Nansemond Co) for use by the city as early as 1755 about the time Francis and Thomas, jr were getting lands in North Carolina below Nansemond in the Chowan area.
Jasper Harrell -- he gets land around 1786 near Wassamassaw Swamp SC believe he main one to sire the TN Harrell lines
Lewis Harrell -- he married a Sarah Perkins daughter of Lewis Perkins a surveyor shows up on land records for many Harrell and others seen on such with them.He also shows getting lands near Jacob in Wassamssaw and settled in the Darlington Marion areas of SC.
As for Levi Harrell son of Jacob wedding twice have tracked down his wives and now believe he only married once before American Revolution to an Esther White as the main family lines showing on land records around where Levi and Jacob come into SC out of NC around 1768 is White and the Cole family show mainly back up into the Chowan River area of NC where Francis Harrell of Johnston NC live and died around 1804 about the time Levi is said to take a second wife.Since Francis Harrell of Johnston was probably an uncle and his wife Sarah Cole Harrell an aunt to Levi Harrell and his kids figure she may have helded raise Levi and his kids...mainly son Levi born 1777 indicated as grandson of Jacob to get the 204 acres and home on Wassamassaw Swamp per Jacob 1787 will.Since Levi SR died in 1806 and Sarah died in 1807 figure elder family folks mixed up who wed who thus the story Levi wed first Mrs Sarah Cole a widow came about then by 1804 he weds Miss Esther White. Also figure since the main source of the marriages for Levi Harrell come from application to join Daughters of America Revolution that Esther White was possible full or part native american and thus membership in the DAR at that time would not be possible due to her having RED Blood in her veins.Marriage laws in SC prohibited any marriage to indian and whites and also black and whites. This law may also explain why Jacob Harrell wife's name has not been verified and only assumed to be said Mary Peacock; as this marriage is based on a later Jacob Harrell than the one died in 1787 possibly a nephew by Jacob Harrell brother John or Francis born around 1787 and married into the Peacock line, as believe the push the wife back a few years and link her to uncle Jacob born 1734 died 1787 not the Jacob born later and shows on land records after 1787 in areas where elder Jacob lived.
Anyway due to missing records most of this hard to comfirm but what records do survive indicate most of what have said above is the more likely history.Still digging and hoping that by tracking related family lines like the Black and White and Timmons and Simmons and Barfield and Curtis will find a missing piece to the Harrell puzzle.Have found one by way of Allen as Isaac Allen family history indicates he wed an Esther Harrell born 1801 died 1882 as the daughter of Levi Harrell RS.Since the name Esther comes in before 1804 when Levi suppose to wed his second wife Miss (Esther) White by DAR hard to understand why he would name daugher after a wife he yet to wed.Have thought about it being as sister to his wife but that don't look like it.Anyway still looking for the missing bone.
