I don't have anything on Newton or Abraham Black. But there are enough name similarities to suggest that there may be a connection.
But first: Why do you suspect that your Blacks may be from the Adams Co area?
I was going to suggest that Newton may have had a first name Isaac, but thenI saw that Newton had a younger brother named Isaac.I recently came across a Wright family with a son whose name was recorded at various times as Issac N. and then as Newton Wright.
From the 1860 census, Abram Black's wife was Malinda. From the 1880 census and from your family list, Newton names his oldest daughter: Melinda Alena. This is a daughter named for a grandparent. How about a son?The only son you show is Samuel Newton. The Newton comes from his father, but where did the Samuel come from?I don't see a child named for Ida, so you need to be careful with this line of reasoning.
Remember, Newton, like everyone else in that time, married a neighbor (it still happens). He probably married ca 1875.It looks like Newton was living in a boarding house in College Twp, LinnCo, IA, in 1870.His age is OK, but his birth place is given as NY.This is on page 179.So read the 1870 census for Linn Co, page by page, looking for an Ida, age 13 +/- a year or two, b in Iowa, parents b NY/PA.Her father may have been Samuel.
Did Newton fight in the Civil War?My ggf was born in 1843 and fought in the CW.His widow filed for a pension.Check the CW Pension records. My ggf's file in the National Archives in Washington was where I learned he was born in Adams Co, OH.Before that I was on a hopeless search of a wall of Ohio books at our library looking for George Washington Wright with a son named William!
Back in Adams Co there is an Abraham Black listed in the 1880 census in the twp where my Wrights settled in 1799.Washington Wright from Adams Co, married Agnes Gill Black.Agnes had an Uncle Isaac Black, b 1797 in Pennsylvania.Isaac's oldest child, Margaret, was b in 1821.This is from secondary information and I have not verified it.
Where was Abram Black in the 1850 census?I don't have on-line access to the 1850 census except at the library.
So if you have a reason to think that Abram and Newton were from Adams Co (not just a guess), the name similarities suggest they could be related.
But as I said there are two apparently unrelated Black families in Adams Co.My lines overlapped into Brown, Adams and Highland Co.One Black family in Adams Co came from southwestern PA and settled closer to the Ohio river from where my Wrights lived
Another consideration, if you can locate a living male descendant of Samuel Newton Black or of Abram (note: there were two other Blacks living in Marion Twp in 1860 who could also be related), is to join the Black Surname DNA Project at FamilyTreeDNA http://www.familytreedna.com/surname.asphttp://www.familytreedna.com/surname.asp
It may take a DNA test of a proven male Black descendant in your line and a proven male Black descendant from my Adams Co Black ancestors to prove that your Abram/Newton are related to the Adams Co Blacks.I haven't found Abram in the Adams Co records. But I also could have missed him.
Let me know of your progress and give me the answer to my first question.
