Looking for origins of John Black of Rockingham Co, VA.The names John and Henry Black appear often in the records of Rckhm Co after the Revolutionary War, sometimes noted thus: (signed) Johann Schwartz, etc. The John Black I am researching was b. 12-13-1756 and d. 1826.His wife's name was Catharine (d 1853)and the family moved to Preble Co, OH c. 1812, and had a farm near West Alexandria. A DAR book (1938) lists him as a veteran of the Rev War, but I don't find him in any of the official lists.I am beginning to wonder if he is a Hessian mercenary, or if he maybe fought as a loyalist. The children I have for John and Catherine are:John, Jr.,(m. Barbara Stoner); Frederick (m. Susanna Montle); Sarah (m. Samuel Moore); Susan; Jacob (or Joseph?); Elizabeth; Polly (Mary Ann?); Abraham (m. Nancy Stoner, sister of Barbara); Katharine (m. Solomon Oswalt). Some PA areas required Germans to use the English equivalent after the war and other German families followed.A German naming pattern follows a tradition of naming the first or second son after his grandfather so I wonder if John's father was a Frederick Schwartz. Can anyone shed light on who John's parents were and what his role in the war might have been?Anything on his wife, Catherine would also be appreciated.
