Col. Charles Christopher Blacknall, Civil War, VA
In the booklet "Crossroads to History, Winchester to Gettysburg and Beyond,"there is a picture of a gravestone for this man.This is located in the "Stonewall Cemetery," a five acre plot within the Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, VA.The title of the article is "Ghosts of Confederate Lane.""Confederate Avenue is the western border of Stonewall Cemetery.It weas here that the final battle line of the 3rd battle of Winchester was played out.The date September 19, 1864.Three ghosts are alongside Confederate Lane; Colonel Blacknall, Major Jones, and Colonel Patton.Two of the three were mortally wouned at the Third Battle of Winchester."
Apparently Col. Blacknall was shot in the foot and while they were deciding whether or not to operate, he died; November 6, 1864. For years after his death, thumping sounds were heard from the room where he died.He left a wife and children.
