Does anyone have a list of the children of Isham Blaylock, Jr. of Haywood County, North Carolina?
The earliest record that I currently have for Isham Blaylock, Jr. is his 1816 marriage record to Mary "Polly" Buchanan. This marriage record has been transcribed on Ancestry as follows:
NAME:Isom Blalock SPOUSE:Poley Buckehon MARRIAGE:Haywood, North Carolina
I believe "Isom" should be Isham.I believe "Poley" should be Polly and was a nickname for Mary.I believe "Buckehon" should have been Buchanan. The name has also been spelled as "Buckhannon".She may have been related to the Buchanan family of Macon County, North Carolina.Macon County, North Carolina was formed from the western part of Haywood County in 1828.
William Ramsey Buchanan married Margaret Stiles on 25 Mar 1816 in Haywood County, North Carolina. That is only a few weeks after Mary married Isham.
After the marriage record in 1816, the next record I have for Isham Blaylock, Jr. is the 1820 census record. The 1820 census forHaywood County, North Carolina lists two Blalock households: Isam Blalock, Sr. and Isam Blalock, Jr.I haven't seen anything to document their relationship but I am assuming Sr. and Jr. were father and son.The record for Isham Blaylock, Jr. looks like this:
The 3 males under the age of 10 are a surprise. The general rule of thumb is to expect the first child to be born about 1 year after a marriage and then other children 2 years apart. Thus, for a couple married in 1816, you would expect their first child to be born in 1817 and their second child in 1819 and their third in 1821.But the 1820 census has them already with 3 children.Of course the children could have been born more quickly than expected or the census report could be wrong or there could be twins but surviving twins were rare so I like to be sure my numbers are solid before I believe there were twins.
I have not seen anything to document the relationship but there have been reports that Isham Blaylock of Habersham County, Georgia was a son of Isham Blaylock, Jr. of Haywood County, North Carolina. The census records have been surprisingly consistent in reporting the year of birth of Isham Blaylock of Habersham County, Georgia as 1813 or 1814.Thus, it seems Isham of Habersham was born several years before the marriage of Isham, Jr. of Haywood to Mary "Polly" Buchanan in 1816.It looks to me like Mary may have been a second wife and not the mother of Isham of Habersham.
Was Isham Blaylock of Habersham County, Georgia a son of Isham Blaylock, Jr. of Haywood County, North Carolina and an unknown first wife?
Also, it seems a lot of researchers have confused Isham Blaylock, Jr. who was born about 1795 and married to Mary "Polly" Buchanan in 1816 with the Isham Blaylock who was born about 1813 and married to Mary "Polly" Brookshear. As far as I know, no marriage record has been found for Isham Blaylock and Mary "Polly" Brookshear but they would not have married in 1816 if he wasn't born until 1813.
The next record that I have for Isham Blaylock, Jr. of Haywood County, North Carolina is the 1830 census:
It seems by 1830 there were only 2 young males born before 1820 in the household. What happened to the 3rd is a mystery but if Isham of Habersham was born in 1813 he would not fit in the 10-15 age group. If he was born in 1813, he would have been 17-years-old in 1830.Of course, sometimes census records are wrong.
By 1840 it seems Isham Jr. had died and Mary is listed as the head of the household. She is listed between Timothy Queen and F.A. Blaylock.
There is no young female listed in Mary's 1840 household but there was a marriage record for a Polly Blaylock and Timothy Queen two years earlier.I am assuming Timothy Queen is her son-in-law and F.A. Blaylock is her son.
It has been suggested that Marinda Blaylock who married Enoch Hall on 6 NOV 1841 was a daughter of Isham Jr & Mary but if she did not marry until 1841, where was she in 1840?
So, putting all this together, I have the following preliminary list of children for Isham Blaylock, Jr. of Haywood County, North Carolina:
Isham Blaylock, Jr. & unknown first wife (possibly married about 1812): - 1813 : Isham Blaylock of Habersham County, Georgia (married Mary "Polly" Brookshear)
Isham Blaylock, Jr. & Mary "Polly" Buchanan (married 1816) - 1817 : F. A. Blaylock - 1819 : unidentified male - 1821 : Polly Blaylock (married Timothy Queen) - 1823 : unidentified female - 1825 : unidentified male - 1827 : unidentified male - 1829 : unidentified male - 1831 : unidentified male
I know this turned out to be long.Thank you for sticking with it and reading the whole thing. If anyone has any historical documentation that can add to the information on the family of Isham Jr., please share it here.Thank you.
