Re: Boisen, Rostermundt in Iowa
My sister's name is also Kate, so I had to call her before I wrote the first followup to make sure it wasn't her!
I'm glad your great grandma is doing well.My grandmother Dorothy Boisen keeps tabs on all the Iowa relatives, especially the Vinton ones.I remember visiting Mae, Shirley and Eldo about 15 years ago during a college break. We also visited Adeline and Bernie.I know there was some sort of family argument years back, but my grandparents had already moved to Minnesota, so they could visit everyone and not be "blacklisted". We currently live in the Twin Cities. My grandma still lives on the farm near LeCenter, MN.
Thank you for the valuable information on Mary R.I have a picture of her younger brother John (Johann) but very little else.Your info helps a great deal.
William (born Wilhelm) Boisen was born on May 8, 1852 in Flensburg, Duchy of Schleswig, which was Danish at the time.He had a normal common school education and was apprenticed to a mason before he emigrated to the US in August of 1872 aboard the SS Humboldt. His mother had recently died of TB and his father was trying to raise the younger children alone.William arrived in New York and was processed at Castle Garden before heading west to Illinois. He traveled up and down the Mississippi doing masonry and contracting work before settling in Benton County, IA around 1874.This is where he met Mary Rostermundt and you know the rest of that story. He was mayor of Van Horne, and laid many of the sidewalks as well as building some of the brick buildings in town.He ran a furniture and undertaking business and was also a prominentmember of the school and bank boards.I will get you more details on his siblings, etc., later.
I have some information on the Pieper side from a fourth cousin who did a detailed history of that family.Regarding the Boons (not Boone like everyone thought), I don't have a lot other than they settled around the Norway, IA area, and many are buried in the local Catholic cemetery.
The Boons were from Belgium and I tried to locate a town when I visited Belgium in 1993.It appears that they came from a small farming village near Brussels.I have some dates, etc., which I can get to you soon as well.
It was great to hear from you!Keep in touch
