Well according to my grandfather Walter James Drinkwine now Boivin it was Boivin. It was only Boivin in Canada. When they immigrated to the United States a "bright" immigration officer told them that they had to chage it to an English last name.So since they wanted to become U.S. citizens they did. However a few generation went by and the family moved back and forth to and from Canada they decided (atleast my branch) to change it back to Boivin.Mainly because that was the name it was sopose to be and because their childen were being teased. My aunt Marilyn was born as a Drikwine but when she got teased in school and since most of the family in Canada were Boivin they legally changed it back to Boivin. I hear some of the Boivin/Drinkwine family did not want to change it they liked Drinkwine so they just kept it how the "bright" immigration officer thought it should be.
