Looking for Bowens/Bones from Barcull Co Mayo
My grandfather Thomas used the surname BOWENS when he came over from Co Mayo to Durham around 1902. In Ireland the name was BONES in all the BMD's registrars except when my great grandfather Patrick used BOWENS when he was registered on the Griffiths Valuation in 1856. I think that the person registering the BMD's entered the name as he heard it so other variations were Bohns, Bownes etc. The family came from the BARCULL townland and Patrick's widow Margaret (nee Dooney) was recorded in the 1911 Irish Census as living in house No 11 in BARCULL. MY grandfather Thomas married Bridget HARKIN in 1903 at St Patricks RC Church in Langley Moor Co Durham. Her father James HARKIN and his wife Catherine CALLAGHAN also came from the same area around Kilmovee Parish and were married there in 1870; had a daughter Mary (died 1944), left Mary in Barcull and the migrated to Byers Green in Co Durham where they had several more children including my grandmother Bridget. My granddad Thomas died in 1923 and Bridget died in 1924 both in Langley Moor.
I would be very interested in contact from the Bones/Bowens/Bohns/Harkins/Callaghans/Dooney families searchersso we can exchange information.
I can be contacted at [email protected] and I am living in Buckinghamshire.
Best regards,
James Bowens (aged 69)
