Mary, I am not a Botsford, nor do I know anything abt that family. My interest, and maybe yours too, is the fact that I bought, (some years ago), a print relating to this family. This is a folk painting of grave stones, dated abt 1815, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection. It is titled "Polly Botsford and Her Children." I chose you because I think it must have a NY connection, and of the name of one of the children.
Large stone for the Mother; smaller ones for the children
Sacred to the Memory of Polly Botsford who died July 13, 1813 Aged 59 years
In Memory of Polly Botsford who died March 8, 1793 Aged 1 year
In Memory of Gideon Botsford who died December 18th 1774 aged 4 months
On one side, leaning on the large stone is a young woman, with another woman opposite; the last holding the hand of a young girl, and she then holds the hand of a younger girl. This stone is large and 'blocky' with an adornment on top, that for all the world looks like an upside down Christmas ornament. The ones with the tear drop bottom. I have no idea if it represents the actual stone or not. There is a gate nearby that leads into a stylized building that I assume is Heaven. But don't take my word for it, as I am not into art interpretation. I give you all the information so that you might trace it, if you know these names. You were the only one with a Gideon in the family, so I send it to you. I think the name Polly is used, interchangeably, with Molly for Mary. Carleen
