The Mysterious Bott or Botts Families of Halifax Co., VA & the Surrounding Area.
While trying to find an ancestor for my Thomas Comer Botts of Abbeville Co., SC, I've been looking at the Halifax Co., VA area.
As usual, just when you think you might be on the verge of solving one problem, you end up with 100 other questions.
I'm trying to make the parents of my Thomas Comer Botts be Frederick Bott or Botts who married Elizabeth Comer, daughter of Thomas Comer, on Oct 10, 1785 in Halifax Co.
I immediately found that I was running into other Bott families because some people want to say that this Frederick Bott is the one born in Dinwiddie Co., VA abt 1757 & d. 1842 in Bedford Co., VA or somewhere in there.
So I've had to sort this out before I could do anything else, & in that sorting process I got sucked into that Great Black Hole of Bott & Botts research.
I've decided that my Frederick is NOT the one from Dinwiddie Co. & that my Frederick is younger.
But as I've looked at some Halifax Co. deeds & censuses, I find:
That the Dinwiddie Co. Frederick is said to have married Martha Wall. But Ancestry trees indicate that Wall was not her maiden name, but that Martha Somebody had married a Burgess Wall, & he just happened to die in 1788 in Halifax Co., VA.
And it so happens that on the so-called 1790 census there's a Martha Wall, head of household, living very close to the Comer & Bott families that I'm working with.
Not only that, but the whole area in there is full of Wall families. So maybe this is the Martha Wall that Frederick of Dinwiddie marries in 1791.
In this same area of Halifax Co., I find records for a Conrad Bott, Sr. who's on the 1790 census & has bought land in the area at least by 1781, if not before. I'm thinking that Conrad, Sr. is a good candidate for father of my Frederick Bott, & both names sounding good & Germanyish to my ear.
In this same area on the 1790 census is a Jonathan Arnold Bott or Botts, Sr. & Jr., living next to each other. I can't find anything about them & don't know if they're English or Germans hiding under English names. He could also be father of my Frederick, but I just have an intuition he isn't.
Besides my young Frederick Bott, there are records of a Joel Bott or Botts in the area, & I think it likely he's a son of Conrad Sr or Jonathan Arnold Sr.
At any rate, maybe some of these groups are related, such as Conrad Sr & Frederick of Dinwiddie being brothers & my young Frederick being named after him or something.
That's about all I want to throw out there for now, or I'll start rambling. I'm putting some of this in my Ancestry tree, "Some Metro Atlanta Families & Their Connections & Origins", for anyone interested in taking a look, but this is very much a work in progress.
