Pott/Butt/Bott & variants connection - call for DNA testing

By JoAnne Anderson February 05, 2011 at 01:11:29

I'm calling on males with the names above to consider DNA testing.By way of DNA testing (Family Tree DNA) we find our family is descended from Wilhelm Pott, Berks Co. PA, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1734 from Rotterdam. We descend through his grandson William Butt.On FTDNA we are listed under Butt with only one match since it turns out we are really Pott!No matches yet under Pott. Our branch went by Bott; another that we match with, Butts.I'm seeking ultimately to fill in the parentage of my gggrandf.John Butt, b. 2/4/1820 York Co., PA. I think John Degenhard(t) Pott is either his grandf. or ggrandf. As I understand it, Wilhelm Potts' family headed west in PA from Berks Co., founding the towns of Pottstown and Pottsville on the way. Some settled around Franklintown, York Co., probably also in Cumberland and Adams Co., PA.Some continued on to Ohio, Indiana, and farther.Lots of info is online about Wilhelm and his son John. They were successful iron masters in the 1700s and involved with many forges and mills in eastern PA.They were from Holland, Germany, Switzerland, or England, depending on what you read. Google.books has some interesting reading about the family. It seems this line is NOT the same as the Potts family as no matches there either.I'm posting on the Butt/Bott family forum as well.
