I have been collecting information about the descendants of Richard Bowen of Rehoboth, MA for over 20 years. This includes his grandson Samuel (1659-1728/9) and other descendants who settled in southern New Jersey. The Rev. Timothy Brooks married Hannah Bowen, Samuel's sister, and led a group of Baptists from MA and RI down to NJ.
Samuel Bowen was born (to Obadiah and Mary Clifton Bowen) in Rehoboth, Bristol County, MA on 16 July 1659 and died in Cohansie,Salem County, NJ about 1728/9. His wife was Elizabeth Wood, born about 1658 in Swansea, Bristol County, MA and died in Salem County, NJ between 1703 and 1728. She was first married to Samuel Wheaton on 5 Dec. 1678 in Swansea. Samuel Wheaton was Samuel Bowen's first cousinand was born on 30 Oct. 1643 in Salem, MA and died on 2 Feb. 1683/4 in Swansea. Samuel and Elizabeth Wheaton had three children: Jonathan (b.3 Mar. 1679 Swansea,d.~ Oct.1713 Salem Co.,NJ), Noah (b.2 July 1681 Swansea,d.~ May 1716 Salem Co.,NJ), and Samuel (b.21 July 1683 Swansea,d. aft 1721 MA).
Samuel Bowen and Elizabeth Wood Wheaton married on 26 May 1684 in Swansea and had 8 children:
John b.17 May 1685 Swansea,d. ~Nov.1747 Salem Co.,NJ
Samuel b.1 Jan.1688 Rehoboth,d, ~Dec.1727 Salem Co.,NJ
Dan b. 1 Aug.1690,d. ~Feb.1729 Salem Co., NJ
Elijah b. 4 Aug.1695 Rehoboth,d. 23 Sep.1773NJ
Joanna b. 1 Dec.1696 Rehoboth,d. bef 1728
Mary b. 9 Feb.1698 Bristol,Bristol Co.,RI,d. aft 1728
Clifton b. 12 Feb.1700/1 Bristol,d. aft 1728NC
Elizabeth b.30 Dec.1703 Bristol??, d. aft 1728
John Bowen apparently married twice, the second time to his cousin Rachel Bowen from MA. John had at least 10 children: Isaac, Lydia, Joanna, Abigail, John, James, Joseph, Samuel, Hannah, and William.
Samuel Bowen Jr. married Martha Dixon and had 8 children:
Samuel, Stephen, Silas, Nathaniel, Catherine, Moses, Dan, and Joseph. The last two are not mentioned in the main body of his will, but are identified on an addendum on the back of the will. The NJ Will Abstracts do not mention these two, but records prepared By Col.T.J.Long confirm this.
Dan Bowen married Mary Walling, who came with her father Jonathan and mother Elizabeth from Rhode Island. Dan and Mary had at least 9 children: Dan, Jonathan, Mary, Enoch, Noah, Eve, Deborah, Phebe, and Elijah.
The Rev. Timothy Brooks was born on 9 Oct. 1661 in Woburn, MA and died in Cohansie, Salem Co., NJ in 1716. He married Hannah Bowen on 10 Nov. 1685 in Swansea. She was the daughter of Obadiah and Mary and was born on 3 May 1665 in Rehoboth. She died after 1716. They had at least 7 children: Timothy, Seth, Hannah, Zebulon, Keziah, Patience, and Zerviah.
