Brandons of Greene County, Indiana-from VA & NC
We are searching for the parents of George Calviness/Caveness Brandon. Soon a descendant, David Brandon, will be getting the results of his DNA test, and we are hoping that we will be able to relate to DNA tests of other Brandon families. I will post here what he has found.
George Calviness/Caveness Brandon, born 06 February 1792 VA, died 08 May 1844 Greene Co., IN. George married 01 July 1815 Surry Co., NC (date of Marriage Bond) Quintilla "Tillar" Hutchens, born 13 February 1801 Surry Co., now Yadkin Co., NC. In censuses, she states that she was born in VA, born 13 February 1802 Surry Co., (now Yadkin) Co., NC (From: Michael Warner), died 10 January 1886 Greene Co., IN. Quintilla’s father was John Hutchins/Hutchens, her mother: Jane "Jennie" Braswell or Brasswell. John Hutchins was the son of Strangeman Hutchins.
George Calviness Brandon's son, Leander "Levi" Brandon named a son, George Calvin Brandon, so there is credence given to his middle name being Calviness.
George's middle name could have been Caveness; there were many males surnamed Caveness in the area of Rowan Co., NC. Does anyone have any information about these Caveness families, and if George is a descendant of a female Caveness?
We do not know the names of the parents of George Calviness Brandon. He came to Center Twp., Greene Co., Indiana with his wife Quintilla "Tillar" Hutchins and five children, two sons, Eli and Levi Brandon, and three daughters, Elizabeth "Betsy", Nancy, and Lydia. With them came George's brother, Allen Brandon, born 1790-1800, his wife and a child.Allen's wife was born 1810-1815; her name is not known. There is also a Thompson T. Brandon, born 10 October 1803 in Virginia, died 8 September 1876 in Greene Co., Indiana, who came at this time with his wife, Lydia, surname unknown, born about 1803 in North Carolina (her parents were also born in NC), died 1892, and three children, a son and two daughters according to the 1830 census. It is not known if this was another brother, or if, or how, he was related to George C. and Allen Brandon.George Brandon died 08 May 1844 in Greene Co., IN.Thompson T. Brandon was the administrator of George Brandon's estate.Thompson and Lydia are buried at "Flynn Cemetery" in Center Twp., Greene Co., IN.
The above we gleaned from "Early Settlers of Greene County, Indiana (From Southern States)," Compiled by William R. Henry, deceased, © 1986; Published by: Central Georgia Genealogical Society, Inc., Post Office Box 2024, Warner Robins, Georgia 31099-2024, and Cosponsored by: Greene County Historical Society, Bloomfield, Indiana, Indiana 47424.
"According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1830."
In the 1820 Census of Battalion 3 or Forks of the Yadkin, Rowan County, North Carolina, we found:
Sarah Brandon, pg. 366:
1 male 10-16
1 male 16-26
1 male 18-26
1 male 45 & over
1 female under 10
1 female 26-45.
John Brandon, pg. 366:
1 male 45 & over
1 female 45 & over.
William Brandon, pg. 366:
1 male under 10
1 male 26-45
1 female 26-45
1 female 45 & over.
George Brandon, pg. 378 (George Calviness/Caveness Brandon):
1 male 26-45 (George)
2 females under 10, (Elizabeth "Betsy", & Nancy)
1 female 16-26 (Quintilla-married at the age of 13 or 14yrs.).
They were all in separate households, and I have absolutely no further information on them. This is what I am seeking.I want to find out if he was related to any of them, and who were the parents of George Calviness Brandon.
Quintilla gave Virginia as her place of birth, which I have always doubted (I believe it was Surry Co., NC), but her father, John, may have spent some time, maybe years, in Virginia, since that is where John's father, Strangeman Hutchins, came from, and they did have family still there. Quintilla could have been right. Did George and Quintilla meet in Virginia, and he went to Surry Co., NC to court, and marry her, then settling on the Yadkin River in Rowan Co., NC? Since part of Surry Co., is now Yadkin Co. fairly close to Rowan Co., this could be!

[This contained the NW1/4 NE1/4 40 acres which George Caveness{as spelled) BRANDON received from the US Govt on 11 Oct 1832, Tract Book 45; also, the NE 1/4 NE 1/4 (40 acres) which George C. BRANDON purchased on 23 Mar 1840] The heirs were listed as: Elizabeth L. PAYNE, Nancy LONG, Lydia HUTCHENS, Eli BRANDON, Ellis BRANDON, Levi BRANDON, Jane BREWELL(sp?-[s/b Beasley-CJH?] ), Elijah BRANDON. These lands were located where "Little Cincinnati" in Center Township, Greene County, Indiana is now.
I am a descendant of Eli Atchison Brandon, a son of George's.
George Calviness is shown in many Trees on the Internet as George Caveness Brandon, and even in a few land records of Greene County, Indiana. Therefore we are showing below the Taxable Property in Chatham Co., NC in 1815. Was George a descendant of George or Henry Caveness, or were they, Uncles or cousins? We may be wrong he could be George Caveness Brandon.

List of the Taxable Property in Chatham Co. for the year 1815 as per return of the Justices Appointed to
Receive them.
NOTE: The men who are listed only, as a 'white poll' are either young men, without any land and possibly, still living at home or, men over 50, who probably have sold or given their land to their children.
It is my understanding, according to N.C. law, men had to be counted as a 'poll' when they became 21 years of age and exempted at age 50, at this period of time.
However, IF there IS acreage and there is NO poll then, you may be sure that the man is exempted for being over age or physically impaired.
Caveness, George
Caveness, Henry
George and Henry Caveness are obviously over the age of 50, or they are disabled; they are men over 50, who probably have sold or given their land to their children.
