I think I've discovered why you couldn't get that deed from the clerk in Edgecombe County. The following is from Tommy Colbert in the Edgecombe County archives:

The first six Edgecombe Precinct deed books are today located in Halifax County where the original Edgecombe County court was located. They probably record land transactions in what today would be Edgecombe, Nash, Halifax, Franklin, Warren, the northern part of Wilson and parts of Granville, Orange and Martin Counties.
