Brenton ancestry - 1700s & before - PA
While in Washington DC on business recently I had a small amount of time to spend at the DAR genealogy library. They have a copy of "The Life and Times of James Brenton, Major, Virginia Militia" by Chester F. Brenton, 1975.It says further copies are available for the cost of reproduction from N. 4702 Madison St., Spokane WA 99208, though I don't know if this is still so after 25 years.
The preface has the following interesting information: Samuel Brenton, 1849, who was a Congressman, wrote "my grandfather's grandfather was Robert, and he was first to come to Virginia".Also, Chester writes, "I have a theory, no a hypothesis really, that Governor William Brenton who came to Boston in 1633, who it is thought had a son John, who went to the far West and about whom they heard married and had a son and was killed by the Indians -- This John is not mentioned in his Father's will. There is a John Brenton appearing in Maryland into VA 1670, claiming land there.I hypothesize that John's son or grandson, name of Robert, moved into VA from Maryland and that Robert is the grandfather of all the Brentons who show up around Brownsville, PA just before the Revolutionary War - I cannot prove anything - yet."
