Jeannette - This is a crucial question.I have avoided pushing my Briggs family tree back before 1700 because of this problem. It is my belief that the John Briggs that married Hannah Fisher is not the same as the one that married Frances Fisher. The reason is a bit complicated, but to see where I'm coming from, go to the Family History (LDS) search site and enter Father: John Briggs, Mother: Hannah Fisher. The names you get are: Thomas Job Enoch Edward John William Susanna
... born in Portsmouth or Tiverton, RI.
Next, enter Father: John Briggs, Mother: Frances Fisher; you get: Thomas Daniel John James Frances Richard Robert Mary Ann Sarah ... born in South Kingston (or Newport).
My guess (and it's not more than that) is that the John who married Hannah Fisher is the son of John Briggs and the grandson of the oft-cited Henrie Briggs of England. The other one (probably the forebearer of my Briggs line) came to America separately.
