George William Byrd, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, resided thereafter in the Toe River Valley.Family tradition has it that he was born in 1730, and he died on jacks Creek in 1825 (as attested by NC Supreme Court case concerining his estate.)No pension file is available, since he died prior to the pension act of 1832.
According to his grandson (Mack Byrd, of Guilders Creek) "When Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, George Byrd was a-standing right thar and saw it";he also served as a scout in Washington's army, and was assigned to gurad the transfer of funds from the French to support the American cause.
Other family members said that George lived in Virginia and wanted to marry Annie Hutson.he family did not favor the idea and sent her to school in Charleston, SC to keep her away from him.he, however, road on horseback to Charleston and they were marred there (at her aunt's house?)They reportedly then went to the area of Dandidge, Tennessee, where they had relatives (related somehow to George Washington's wife, Martha Custis Dandridge>)Records attest the residence of a George Byrd in Washington or Sullivan County in 1782.
Later he and Annie moved to what is now Madison County, then to Jacks Creek in the present yancey around 1796.There they are buried in unmarked graves, with a vast number of their descendantss.Her family name (Hutson) survives as the given name of several descendants across the generations, although it is often spelled as Hudson.He was married to Annie HUTSON unknown.

William & Betsy lived on Jacks Creek, on the tributary known as Coxes Creek.His death is referred to in the Yancey Court of Pleas & Quarters, Fall, 1862.William Byrd is dead, with no will, Charles Byrd is appointed as Adminiistrator.His wife is stated to be Elizabeth.
Both are buried near where their house was located in unmarked graves.
Lester Byrd, who died at the age of 100, stated that William died of measles near the end of the war.

ii. Rev. Samuel J. BYRD was born on 28 Feb 1789 in Virginia.He died on 5 Apr 1865 in Yancey County, North Carolina.Samuel J. lived on Jacks Creek and is buried in a marked grave near his parents.This distinguished gentleman, who represented Yancey County four times in the State Legislature and held a number of other county offices, was murdered at his home by Union soldiers.
He was also a miller and a Baptist Clergyman.

He was murdered at his home by a group of Union sympathizers who had come to rob him of guns and gunpowder for use in their cause.He warned them not to enter his yard, and when Capt. John Bennett did so, the elder Byrd shot him.The group then set his house afire and told him that they would estinguish it if he would come out (else the would burn him and his wife alive) when he came out he was shot more than twenty times.
iii. George Washington BYRD was born in 1791.He died in 1871 in Yancey County, North Carolina.Geoge lived on Guilders Creek.
iv. Susannah "Sooky" BYRD.Dates unknown.Susannah married a Miller and lived near Newport, Tennessee.
v. Patrick "Pad" BYRD.Dates unknown, Patrick moved to Tennessee in 1833.He owned land in yancey County on Crabtree Creek.
vi. Christopher "Chris" BYRD.Dates unknown,Christopher lived in Cocke County, Tennessee as late as 1840.
vii. Annie BYRD died before 1825.It was concerning the inheritance of Annie's children that her fathers estate went to the Supreme Court.
viii. Mary BYRD was born in 1792.She died between 1870 and 1880 in Yancey County, North Carolina.Mary's husband is buried near "his residence in Tennessee".She lived, after he died, with family on Jacks Creek.Children, if any are unknown.
