I descend from Samuel Briggs also. However, I think there is some confusion about whether his wife was Bennet Ellis or her sister, Elizabeth.
I have read in an Eddy Family History that Bennet Ellis married Obadiah Eddy.I show several children from each "husband" (Samuel and Obadiah)and the dates overlap.Since I am sure that one of my illustrious ancestresses could not have been a bigamist, it appears that something is wrong.
Recently on this BRIGGS GenForum I found a posting that may shed some light on this issue.
In Edna Anne Hannibal and Claude W. Barlow, "John Briggs of Sandwich, Massachusetts and His Descendants", published 1962, it is stated that Samuel Briggs (son of John of Sandwich) m. Bennet, the second daughter of John and Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis.
However, Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson and Maclean W. McLean, in the NEHGR: 119:172 (July 1965) state the following: Elizabeth Ellis, daughter of John-1 and Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis, m. about 1664, Samuel-2 Briggs.Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of John and Elizabeth.
Also from Brownson and McLean: "We believe that there can be little doubt that Samuel Briggs' wife was a daughter of Lt. John Ellis, particularly since his first two daughters were named Elizabeth and Bennet, presumably after his wife's mother and the grandmother, Bennet (Hodsol) Freeman, and that the printed accounts which claim that Briggs married the daughter Bennet Ellis are mistaken, since ... Bennet Ellis was born in 1649, yet the wife of Samuel Briggs had a daughter born in April 1665 when Bennet Ellis would have been barely sixteen years old."
If Samuel Briggs actually married Elizabeth rather than Bennet it would straighten out my list of Bennet's children, since many would be her sister's.
What do you think? How solid is your information that you descend from Samuel and Bennet (Ellis) Briggs?
