Polly's origins are something of a mystery. When Polly died, she left two sons and five daughters, judging by the enumeration of Chisholm's household on the 1790 census for Rutherford Co., North Carolina, together with that of Mary Briggs who was shown as head of a separate household and who was probably related, and some say the probable mother of Polly. Indeed some have concluded that Howell Briggs married Mary Edmunds, rather than Lucy Gray as others assert. Anyway, nearby in Rutherford Co. was a Gray Briggs who some say was Polly's brother. Some assert that Gray died earlier in Surry Co., Virginia.
!Clearly more research needs to be done on the history and origins of both Polly and Gray.
!The 1790 census of Rutherford Co., North Carolina shows::
Jessee Briggs 1121
Gray Briggs 1112
Mary Briggs 1372
First number is males over 16, second is males under 16, third is females over 16, last is females under 16.
!Another account shows that Mary Briggs, the daughter of Howell Briggs, married Zachariah Sims born about 1739 in Virginia, and died ca 1790 in North Carolina. Still another reported record is that Nov. 27, 1757 she married Halcott Pride of Dinwiddie Co. It is important to realize that "Mary" is a common name, and that by the 1750's there were many Briggs families in that area of Virginia. It is entirely arguable whether these other marriages were for the Mary who was a daughter of Howell Briggs. WFT CD 80, tree #1358 says "The will of Howell Briggs, probated Sept. 21, 1775, in Sussex names among the heirs his granddaughters, Elizabeth and Mary Pride, daughters of Mary Briggs and her husband, Hallcott Pride."
!Halcott Pride's will was dated 1774 (Will of Hallcott Pride, Sussex County, 1774. "Virginia Wills & Administrations, 1632-1800", Torrence). He lived in Dinwittie County, Virginia (Notes of Lucy Pride Ingram and Bessie Pride). The marriage of Hallcott Pride of Dinwiddie County and Mary, daughter of Capt. Howell Briggs, Nov. 27, 1757: pg. 29. Wedding of Mary Pride to Edmund Booker, June 28, 1781; Elizabeth Welden Pride on Nov. 3, 1799 to Bennett Moxly; pg. 69. (They may or may not have been the daughters of Mary and Halcott Pride.) "Early Virginia Marriages", ed. Wm. Armstrong Crozier.
!So, we have shown the Polly, who married Chisholm Griffith, as the daughter of Capt. Howell Briggs and Lucy Gray, to preserve at least one version of her parents. However, we would hope that more research is done to clarify her origins. At least one possibility is that Polly was first married to Halcott Pride, and that is reflected in the 1775 will of Howell Briggs. Later she went with her brother and mother to North Carolina, and there married Chisholm Griffith. Researchers report that she and Halcott had just 3 children, and Halcott died 1774. The marriage of Polly to Chisholm Griffith was later, in 1782.
