Virginia, thank you for your reply. I wish that I did know the Ancestry and truthfully, I can't prove that "my" Frederick Briggs came from Virginia. There is a Frederick Briggs in Virginia, son of Thomas, born in 1744. It is said that he married Mary Goodwich in 1772. It is also said that he died in 1789 but I have seen no proof of his death.
Frederick Briggs shows up in SC records in 1769 as a witness in two land records. In 1772 he is listed as a member of the High Hills Baptist Church. In 1773 he has a grant of 150 acres [which would indicate that he was married] on Black River, Craven Co. [would be same area as High Hills Church]
Is this the same man as the Virginia man? And perhaps his wife died and he married in SC?? I find no more records for him in Virginia but many in SC. In 1784 John Lewis names his daughter in his will as Elizabeth Briggs. We believe that Frederick Briggs married Elizabeth Lewis around ?1770-1780.
Can you furnish me with any more clues? The Thomas who was the father of the Frederick in Virginia was a son of Henry according to what I have read. And some records think that Thomas' wife was Frances Gray/Grey.The names do sound the same, don't they?
And the Gray Briggs who died in Miss., according to one write-up, had a son named Frederick!
My ancestor was Thomas Briggs (1784-1839), son of Frederick. He was educated at the Medical School of Pennsylvania as was his only son, Thomas Whitaker Briggs. They both lived and died in SC.
