I tried the link to the wikipedia article you mention regarding Henry Briggs (mathematician). No wikipedia article was found.I would surmise that someone created the article but without sourcing their information and the article was removed. My original comments about not finding any source materials regarding the personal life of Henry Briggs, mathematician, who was also part of the Virginia Company of London as auditor for a few years, remains true to date. The only other mention of a Briggs (or variant spellings) other than of Henry Briggs the auditor in their records that I have seen to date was for a Henry Briggs (haven't seen the spelling for awhile that they used) who sent a letter back to the Company for his brother Thomas. The parentage of Henry and Thomas or further information about them illudes me.I have never seen anything more about either of them and have no knowledge of their identities other than that one letter. That Henry Briggs in Virginia was NOT Henry Briggs the mathematician and auditor of the Company in London.
It is quite possible that Henry Briggs, mathematician, may have never married or fathered any children.I have read elsewhere that his birthplace is known and that he had a known brother (Richard, I believe) who was the headmaster of a school in England. Here is a link to a Biography of Henry Briggs online that includes mention of his brother Richard: http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Biographies/Briggs.htmlhttp://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Biographies/Briggs.html
I believe that there have been several marriages between the Briggs and Chappell families in early Virginia. I know a book was published of research on these families by a distant cousin. I would have to look through my research at home.I think it was John Pritchett who compiled the research and I am drawing a blank on the title of his work.He had it as a website for years and then published it as a book, withdrawing the information from the web.His work was well researched.I know that John Boddie authored several books on Southside Virginia families including the Briggs, Lucas, Collier and Chappell families. John Pritchett found many errors in Boddie's work.
Henry Briggs married (1)Mary ____ and (2) Margery _____ . If memory serves, this Henry's birth date and place has never been established as the early records are not extant. He first married Mary but her maiden name, birth, and parentage have never been established either, although she is often listed as the daughter of John Flood.Mary married 4 times according to various records and had children by all but one of her four husbands.Henry Briggs was her last husband. After Mary's death, Henry Briggs married Margery.I am trying to remember. It is believed that Margery's maiden name was Henshaw (or variant spelling), that she married first John Gilliam by whom she had children (one was a son whose name was written in many ways that are thought to be corruptions of Henshas --Hinchea, Hinchia, etc.). I believe the records show that after John Gilliam died, his widow Margery Gilliam married Henry Briggs.
My own line descends through Henry Briggs and wife Mary's son Samual Briggs. The information you have on Henry Briggs and wife Mary's son Captain Henry Briggs sounds correct but I am not as knowledgeable on the life and descent of Captain Henry Briggs line.
