I am not currently able to access Ancestry.com, as my computer software is too old. I'll go back to work on the Briggses as soon as I can upgrade. I did link a lot of Briggses. I hesitate to make the tree public as yet, as it has some undocumented links.
I appreciate your help.
Some of the Briggses did indeed move on to N. Carolina early on, and their offspring were apparently poorly educated compare to the ones who grew up in Virginia. Then Briggses from both Virginia and N. Carolina moved into Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky, before spreading to Missouri, Arkansas, Texas and points west.
There was another line of Briggses that came from Ireland and settled early on in what's now West Virginia and also moved into the more western states. I don't know whether there were marriages between this group and the other.
My family lived in the area of Fayette County, TN, and LaFayette and Pontotoc Counties, MS, before moving to Arkansas and Texas after the Civil War.
