In researching the John Bright of McDowell county, NC and Knox county, KY I have found that many are affected by a degenerative disease called Charcot-Marie-Tooth. (This disease may go undiagnosed.)This malady causes the muscles to degenarate. Often it affects the legs initially and then migrates to other parts of the body. If a person has the disease, there is a 50 percent chance of passing it on to the children. This disease is somewhat rare, and I know of no cure. It does not appear to be life threatening, however, it can drastically affect ones ability to move about.
I am a descendent of John through his son Davis Bright and the individuals that I have talked with that have the disease or have family members that do, are descendants from Davis Bright (bn Dec. 1858, Knox County, KY).
I am trying to determine just how far back this disease can be traced. The families possibly affected would be Bright, Broughton, Hammons, and others.
I would love to hear from any one who might be a descendant of John Bright (Bn in NC abt 1807) or his father William Bright (Died abt Feb 1835).
