T.W. VAN PELT, one of the well-known old soldiers of this county died at the home of his daughter, MRS. WILL BRIGHT, just north of Decatur last Sunday afternoon, after an illness of several weeks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa Thursday, December 20, l923
T.W. VAN PELT, son of JACOB and MAHALA VAN PELT was born May 24, l839, in Adams County, Ohio, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, MRS. WM. BRIGHT near Decatur, Iowa, Dec. 9, l923, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and l6 days.
At the age of 22, he enlisted in the Civil War Co. K 33rd Reg. Ind.At the end of two years, he came home on a furlough and was united in marriage to SARAH LEWIS, returning to the Army and serving his remaining two years, and was honorably discharged at Indianapolis, Ind., in the year, l865.To this union were born 6 children, four sons and two daughters; three sons and his wife preceding him in death.
In l889, he with his family, came to Iowa where he settled on a farm, living there until the death of his wife in l895, and from that date he has lived with his daughter, MRS. WM. BRIGHT.He was converted at an early age and united with the Methodist Church.
He leaves to mourn his departure, one brother, JOHN VAN PELT, of Lineville, Iowa; two daughters and one son, MRS. WM. BRIGHT, Decatur, Iowa; MRS. FRANK SWISHER, Martindale, Iowa; and JOHN VAN PELT, Martindale, Iowa.Besides his children he leaves ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and a number of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held in the Leon M.E. Church, Dec. ll, and interment in the Leon Cemetery.
