For anyone seeking information on John Richard "Dick" HARRELL he has been researched by the Mississippi Harrells Group of which I am a member. I post the following brief overview from my research:
John Richard "Dick" HARRELL was b. c1844Rankin County MSs/o Isaac E. "Lige" HARRELL &Selah Jane (AKA Louisa Jane) PIERCE (Choctaw Tribe). The Isaac HARRELL family with son John is enumerated on 1850 - 1860 Rankin County MS censuses. It is written on old family group sheets that John Richard Harrell served four years in the Civil War and was married three times...m. c1865 (1) Elizabeth NANU (Native American Name Unknown - Choctaw Tribe) BTB Mary Elizabeth BRIGHT d/o George W. BRIGHT & Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" HALL Redman/Redmond. John Richard & (1) Elizabeth Harrell had four children: William Miller "Will" Harrell m. (1) Elizabeth Jane Sumrall (2) Mrs. Sisley Barbara Haddox Presley (3) Margarette (sic) Unknown; Jesse Harrell m. Matilda Jane Wallace; Blanche Harrell m. BTB "Bill" Roberson (also maybe Unknown Walker) and John "Johnnie" Harrell m. Ellen "Lizzie" McPherson. John Richard & (1) Elizabeth Harrell with children "Will" & Jesse are enumerated in 1870 Holmes County MS census. (1) Elizabeth (BTB Mary Elizabeth Bright) Harrell d. prior to 1880.In 1880 John Richard Harrell m. (2) Mrs. Mary C. Moore ALTON. They are enumerated on the 1880 Yazoo County MS census with all four of John & Elizabeth's children and two children b. to William & Mary ALTON. No children have been found from the marriage of John Richard Harrell & Mrs. Mary C. Moore Alton. John Richard Harrell next m. 30 November 1883 (date taken from copy of actual marriage return) Rankin County MS (3) Mary E(lizabeth) BRIGHT d/o Eliza Jane FORTUNE & Hiram R. BRIGHT s/o George W. BRIGHT & Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Hall Redman. While there is not as of this moment a paper proof, strong circumstantial evidence leads one to believe John Richard Harrell's third wife Mary E(lizabeth) BRIGHT was the niece of his first wife (Mary) Elizabeth BTB BRIGHT. John Richard Harrell & (3) Mary E(lizabeth) Harrell had children: A.J. "Lonnie" Harrell b. 1886 m. "Lizzie" Kuhn;Robert Edward Harrell b. 1888 (death certificate says Scott County MS) m. (1) Bessie Pearl Davis (2) Mrs. Annie Pierce Eldridge; Hiram Monroe Harrell b. 1891 (WWI Registration says Rankin County MS)m. Mary Williams; Anna Harrell b. ? m. ? d. ? (it is told she married young, was married one year and died young). There is no 1890 census and while this family should be in Rankin County MS in 1900 they, along with other Harrells who would have been near by, have NOT been found on the 1900 census. (There are 12 pages missing from the Rankin County MS 1900 census on Ancestry.com). The 1910 Yazoo County MS census enumerates (3) Mary E. (Bright) HARRELL as a widow living with her two sons Robert Edward & Hiram Monroe HARRELL.It is written that Mrs. Mary E. (Bright) HARRELL left Yazoo County MS prior to 1912 and married 10 April 1912 "Frank" SMITH in Rankin County MS. Her date of death is unknown to me at this time but she DID die in Yazoo County MS and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery Yazoo County MS (no headstone ever placed) next to her son Robert Edward Harrell and his wife Bessie P. Davis Harrell.
