...(Jacob Bright) went to Rochdale in 1802. He started his own cotton mill at Greenbank, Rochdale, in 1809. Sons John and Thomas followed him and founded the firm John Bright and Bros. later to be managed by Frank and his son Herbert who became director in 1894. The firm was the first in Rochdale to adopt ring-spinning, to install electricity and telephones and to have a fire brigade, a sports field, and a welfare worker. Thomas' ability ensured success and John could afford to enter parliament where he exercised his remarkable talents for 30 years. John Bright, a brilliant orator, was also a statesman of great foresight, the reforms and policies he advocated, now acceptable without dissent, being judged very radical then.
From my own family history records. I am a great x2 great nephew of John Bright through his sister Margaret (1818).
