I have just gotten into the fray on Wanton Brightman and also have found myself going in cirles.Has anyone been able to nail down his parents yet?
I tried entering simply the name "Wanton" into Heritage Quest and it referred me to well over 3,000 (!) books/articles with this as either the given or surname. From this, I learned that there were multiple governors of early Rhode Island by this name; that Wantons were married into just about all of the prominent southeastern Massachusetts & RI families; it appears that a goodly number of them were Quakers (explaining the RI connection); and that the name appears as far back as Colonial Duxbury....no, I didn't have the patience to look at all 3000+!
About all this proves is that the name is (or was) much more common than I had realized. My original thought had been"who would name a child a word that defines as "loose morals"?"
The connection I am researching is Joseph's daughter Almira's marriage to Simeon Hawes.
