Do you know anything about the following Alabama family?
1870 Conecah Co AL Brightwell, Holly(f) 47 GAwhite , Francis (f) 23 ALwhite , Sarah J (f) 16 ALwhite , Ella E2 ALmulatto
1880 Conecah Co AL Brightwell: Holly56 GA ?? GAwhite SINGLE head-of-house Francis32 AL Bavaria GA white single daughter Sarah28 AL ?? GAwhite single daughter Lizzie12 AL ?? ALmulatto single granddaughter Mary7 AL ?? ALmulatto single granddaughter
1900 Conecah Co AL ED54-Pg4 (from Soundex only) Brightwell, FrancisJuly 1849 AL , EllaMay1864 Aldaughter , HallyFeb1832 GAmother
This interests me because 1)I can't find Holly prior to 1870 2)she never married (single in 1880 census) but 3)she had 2 children by 2 different men (Francis's father born Bavaria; Sarah's father's birthplace unknown) and 4)Francis had 2 illegitimate children by black men and 5)this all took place in Alabama at the time of the Civil War!!!How did they avoid getting tarred and feathered?I am wondering if Holly and her daughters might have been "passing for white".If they were actually mulatto that would explain why they aren't found prior to 1870.
