Actually, Edmund was killed AFTER the Civil War.He was in the Esque Forrest in Dent County, and was mistaken for someone else (perhaps a "bushwhacker"??) and was killed by "friendly fire".At least this is the story that I have been told.I have also been told that he was in the Civil War, but I don't recall ever hearing which side he was on.
According to census records he was born in ALABAMA.This remained constant in census records (ie his children are listed as father born in ALABAMA).
He is said to be the son of Jasper Ewing and Elizabeth (McCellen) Brigman. His father supposedly had a wife and three sons who remained in NC.Jasper apparently deserted them and left with Elizabeth, who is described as "red-headed".Both were supposedly on a river boat.I don't know in what capacity, but it has been conjecture that he was a gambler.Apparently, he angered the wrong people and it is said that he (Jasper) was hanged. After this, Elizabeth deserted the children.I don't know if the Skiles family was related to the mother or father, but they supposedly "bound" the children to them and brought them with them to Missouri.
I would appreciate any further information that anyone might have. Are you a descendant of Edmund's? Joan
