Hi Linda:
I discovered that Joshua Brigman died of a "carbuncle" on the head from a letter of his sister's, Lula, to a close friend at the time of Joshua's death.
The deed that gave him the original injury was found in a newspaper as follows:
1888-10-25, Dallas Morning News
Jacob Briggman Has a Scalp Artery Severered by Policeman.
About o'clock last night the large crowd then assembled on Main street were startled by a man dyed scarlet from blood that was streaming down hs face.He was linked to another man and both were walking rapidly in the direction of the St. George hotel. On reaching the hotel they were advised to find a drug store, and they at once proceeded to Nichol's on the adjoining corner. The wounded man was taken into the dispensary in the rear of the drug store, where a physician made an examination of his injuries, which consisted of a deep cut near the top of the head in which a scalp aretery lay severed. He was so rapidly growing weak that before the flow of blood had been stopped it was found necessary tolay him on the floor, but with the aid of stimulants he soon came to and at a late hour last night was doing well. The wounded man proved to be Josh Brigman of Abbott, and his escort Bill Horn of Hill county.Mr. Horn states that the wound was inflicted at the fair grounds by a policeman named Beesely.Briggman was, he says under the influence of liquor and talking loud when the policeman came up.Horn requested the policeman to deal lightly with Brigman, as the latter was in liquor.A few minutes later he saw the policeman strike Briggman with a cane.
Frank Williams, a bright little boy from Waxahatchie, made the following statement of the affair: "I was standing at a bar talking with a man when I observed Mr. Briggman under the influence of drink. The next thing I new a policeman struck him on the head with what was said to be a loaded cane and the man then lay on the floor. He was brought in a bus in which I also rode.On the way in he threw a hatfull of blood all over me.I cannot say whether or not the policeman was in uniform."
I hope this helps.I don't have Lula's lettershandy but I am quite sure she wrote her friend about her sadness over her brother's death and dying of a scalp carbuncle.
Hope this helps,
Terri Brigman England
