I was reared by Charles Vernon Brinkley and
his wife, Anita Mardell Burdick.Charles
Vernon Brinkley was the son of Frank
Brinkley and Blanche Lewis.Frank Brinkley
was the son of Wm. B. Brinkley of Linn Co.,
Missouri.
When I was young, we were visited frequently
by Thomas Madison Brinkley and his brother,
Charles Brinkley.When Charles Vernon
Brinkley died in 1947, I met "Uncle Alex"
Brinkley of Linneus, Mo., who told me how
he hauled the bricks for the construction of
the Brinkley home, located at 1317 Askew Ave., Kansas City, Missouri. The old home
was built in 1899 for the Honorable Frank
Brinkley, an alderman.Frank Brinkley died
in 1905 from pneumonia; his wife, Blanche
Lewis, died in 1942; they are both buried in
Elmwood Cemetery.
Anita Mardell (Burdick) Brinkley passed away
in Feb., 1950; I inherited the old Brinkley
and resided there until 1954.
Charles Vernon Brinkley was born in Feb.,
1887 and d. Saturday, October 25, 1947 at
11:00 PM from a heart attack.Uncle Vern
had a brother, Rexford Brinkley who was
active, like his father, in Republican
party politics, was born in 1885 and died
in 1912 from TB; he had been married to a
woman named Sallie (last name unknown).
Blanche Lewis' mother, Laura Lewis, who resided with her, was born in 1832 and died in 1931 in K.C., Mo.
Old "Charlie" Brinkley, son of Wm. B.,
married his half sister (Wm. B. had been
twice married) and they had two daughters.
Charley Brinkley at one time lived about
three blocks from us over a nine year period.
We use to go to his home to visit when I
was in grade school.
I have some of the old Brinkley momentos,
such as a letter from the White House, dated
January 22, 1902; another inviting him to
Chicago to attend the laying of a cornerstone
and a picture of him and fellow politicians
taken at Pike's Peak.
Great "Uncle Frank" was a man ahead of his
times. When on the city council, he
sponsored a bil which forbid the sale of
cigarettes to persons under sixteen years of
age.
Blanche Lewis' brother, Frank Lewis, died
in 1963 at the age of 104 yrs.I used to
play penny ante poker with him many times.
Frank Lewis was in charge of the electrical
lighting for the "St. Louis World's Fair."
He later became Manger of the Street Railway
in Jersey City, N.J. Frank Brinkley had
attended the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904
and brought back with him those old
fashioned one-sided records popular at the
time, particularly those of Sousa. I also
have his guidebook to the Fair in my library.
