penelope Ellen Brown Brock (Nelly)
Nelly Brown married James Wadkins Brock 1817 in Union County, South Carolina. They had 12 children and lived near
Browns Creek east of the town of Union. JW Brock died abt 1843 after which Nelly and most of her children moved to Dana North Carolina, where she died 1870. Ancestry.com lists her father as Gabriel Brown and mother Elizabeth Jeter. Nelly was born in South Carolina 1795.
Indeed there was a Gabriel Brown living in Union Co. S.C. during that time. The 96th Districtcensus, which included what became Union Co, in 1780 listed Gabriel Brown and Gabriel Brown Jr.. Captain Gabriel Brown from the 96th District was killed Oct 1780 in the Rev. War Battle of Blackstock in Union Co.. He was Born 1731 in Baltimore Co. Md.. Brown Jr. was active in the Union Co court and land abstracts from 1785-1799.
Capt Gabriel Brown arrived in Union Co. when it was still
considered part of the huge Anson Co. N.C. Gabriel, John, and Jacob Brown were granted land on Browns Creek 1752-54.
Jacob and John sold out 1772 and moved to Washington Co. N.C. which later became Tn. the brothers were the sons of Gabriel Brown of Baltimore Co. Md. He married Mary Keen 1730. He was born after 1705 to John Brown and Elizabeth Sicklemore. John's father was Thomas Brown who was present in Baltimore Co. by 1692.
I have not been able to trace Elizabeth Jeter's pedigree. Betsy Jeter shows up in a Union Co. land abstract 1785. David Jeter is listed in the 1780 census for the 96th Dist. and James Jeter was a witness on a land abstract 12 Sept 1786 when Gabriel Brown sold part of 320 ac he had purchased a week earlier.
Does anyone have information re: Elizabeth Jeter?
