Hi, I am not relation to the Brockschmidt family that I know of as yet, but I do have family from Venne in Hanover in Germany. As for the family taking the name of the estate, that was the custom in Germany. It makes it very hard to trace a family but if there was no son to inherit the farm it would go then to the eldest daughter--who when she married, her husband would take the name of the estate or farm. Their children would be known by the surname of the farm---not the father's surname. I hope this helps for research in Germany. This was explained to me by my grandmother whose ancestors came from Venne.
