Samuel Brockway (1717 – 1806) m. his 1st cousin, Margaret Smith in 1743. She was the daughter of Joseph Smith & Margaret Brockway.
Some postings give Margaret's (wife of Samuel) death as 1755 . . . but since Samuel did not begin divorce proceedings against her until the Fall of 1758 I assume this death date for her is wrong.
Someone asked me if I thought it possible that Abel, the last child born to Samuel and Margaret, could have been the mulatto child referred to in one of the depositions. I thought probably not: I don’t think that Samuel would allow the child to carry his name. The depositions do not give us an indications of the birth date of her illegitimate child but clearly Abel, born 1755, would have been born several years earlier than the divorce. Any thoughts on this - any proof one way or the other?
Does anyone know what happened to Margaret (Smith) Brockway and her mulatto child after the divorce? Has anyone looked for records for anything beyond the divorce?
