Re: William Berry Brogdon 1862 son of Celia M. and David Brogdon
I am researching information on my husband's mother's family. Information that I have from my mother in law (now deceased) is that her father was William Berry "Billy" Brogdon - born7-21-1861 and died 5-17-1941. He was the son of David Brogdon and Celia or Cecelia Martin Brogdon (born 12-4-1840 and died 10-7-1915).
My MIL did not know the names of David Brogdon's parents. She said that when WB was a baby, that his father (David) left to fight in the Civil War. David returned home only one time - when WB was about a year old. She said that David was covered in lice and called out to Celia not to come near him until he could rid himself of the lice. He took off his clothes and buried them to kill the lice and washed himself in the creek. When he left a few days later, he never returned and Celia never heard from him again. They always assumed that he was killed in the war.
Is he a son of the John Brogdon (b.1794 - d.1890) who is buried in the cemetery at Dothan Church?
When WB was about 12 years old, he and his mother walked from somewhere in NC to what was then Marion County, SC (now Dillon County, SC). They lived on or near the J.R. Reaves place. I do not know if there is any family connection with the Reaves.
In the 1860 census, I found a David Brogdon (age 35) and a Sealey Brogdon (age 20) in Robeson County, NC. This would be the correct age for Celia since she was born in 1840. I do not know David's date of birth, so I don't know if this is the right David Brogdon or not. I can not find any other information on David in this area. If he is the son of John from Marion County, what was he doing in NC?
My MIL's sister recently told me that she remembered their father (WB) telling her when she was a little girl that his father (David) had relatives in Sumter, SC.
There is a Joel Davis Brogdon born 1-18-1841 and died 6-19-1862 in the Civil War, who is listed on the Brogdon Family Web Site as a son of John Bagnal Brogdon and Elizabeth Priscilla Davis. There is no wife or child listed under his name. Could this possibly be WB's father, with "Davis" being misunderstood as "David"? If so, why didn't Celia know the date of his death? Joel Davis would have been 20 years old when WB was born.
Any information or help that you can give me on this would be greatly appreciated. I keep hitting dead ends on this.
