Re: William Berry Brogdon 1862 son of Celia M. and David Brogdon
Wow! Thanks for all of the information. This is a whole lot more than I have been able to find so far.
More questions - Any idea who David's mother was, who I assume was the 1st wife of John Sr.? Is there evidence that John ever lived in the Buck Swamp area of Marion County? This is the area where the Reaves family lived and to which Celia and WB went when they left NC.
The Buck Swamp area is about 8 miles from the Dothan Church area. Is it possible that John lived near Buck Swamp around 1873-74? If so, maybe he worked for the Reaves family, possibly as a farm laborer. That would explain Celia and WB coming to the Buck Swamp area.
Mrs. Reaves was Sarah McMillan - daughter of Malcolm McMillan and Elizabeth Sarah Williamson. They lived in the area of Marion County that is now Mullins. She married J.R in 1857 and moved to the farm on Buck Swamp. This farm was his inheritanace from his mother. His father was George W. Reaves. I do not know his mother's name. From this, I don't see a family connection, unless it would be through J.R. Reaves mother.
At some point, Celia married a Frank Gray. She then moved from the Reaves place. I am not sure if WB moved with her or if he stayed with the Reaves. My guess is that he stayed with the Reaves for 2 reasons. First, apparently, the Reaves family thought a lot of WB because my MIL's sister told me that Mrs. Reaves made the suit that WB got married in (1st time, in 1879), and that he wore Mr. Reaves shoes for the same occasion. Second, WB and his 1st wife settled in the Buck Swamp area.
My MIL did at one time state that there was an Indian family connection. This was a long time ago, and, unfortunately, if she ever said what it was, I don't remember. Her skin had enough pigment in it that I don't ever remember her using suntan lotion, yet I don't recall her ever being sunburned. This indicates to me that there was something to the Indian connection.
Do you possibly have pictures of Mary Jane? Or of your grandmother? Your grandmother would be of the same generation as WB. I have several pictures of WB and would like to see if there is a family resemblance.
Any other information that you have would be greatly appreciated.
