My Brough family were originally called "Brugh."They came from Germany in the mid 1700s and settled in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The Ohio branch of the Brughs changed their name to Brough in the mid 1800s. (We pronounce it Bruff). If you are from Ohio and are interested in specific information, I can send you what I have.
I believe that one of the main lines of Broughs in this country are of English descent. There is a website -- www.broughfamily.org -- devoted to the English Broughs. It appears that much of this family originally settled in Utah and Wyoming in the mid-1800s.
There may be other Brough families that also settled in the United States, but I don't have any information about them.
It's great that you are interested in your family history. You might want to contact the local genealogy society from the county where you were born.www.usgenweb.org has a links to states and then to county websites. These county sites usually tell you how to contact the local genealogy society. They may have more information on the nationalities of people who originally settled in that area, which could give you a clue as to which Broughs are yours.Good luck, and I hope you can find the information you want!
