The Browne Family of Galway

I don't know whether I'm descended from the Brownes of Galway, but I'm definitely descended from *a* Brown family.I don't know much about them except that they were of English descent (I remember one source said they were Scottish, Irish, or Scotch-Irish, and I'm looking everywhere for it, because it deviates from consensus). One John Brown, born probably in the 1730s or 1740s, came to Maryland as a merchant. He was a Loyalist and probably fled the Colonies during the American Revolution.I am keeping open the possibility that he is a Galway Browne rather than from England; the Galway Brownes were of English descent, so I've read.
I found a John Browne whose circumstances line up more or less with our John Brown's; I want to learn more about him as I think he is a promising candidate. In 1780, while living in Dublin, he wrote a letter to his brother James, care of Henry Browne in Baltimore, about the hard times he was experiencing. He mentions his mother, his uncle and aunt Donnelly, his sister Catherine, and other relatives.
