Catharine Brown married David McGhee, Tyrone
In 1678 David McGhee, very prominent figure in the Strabane area of Tyrone, died, leaving a will which has luckily survived to this day in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).
In his will David mentions his children and his wife, Catharine.Other documents from this era lead me to believe that this Catharine is indeed Catharine Browne, daughter of John Browne.
In a listing from 1622 David lives in a small group of Scots settlers, among them John Browne. The Brownes were also prominent members of the Strabane area up through the 18th century.I believe that David is the son of John Macghee who came from Balmaghie Parish,Kirkcudbrightshire,Scotland in the very early days of the plantation, about the same time I understand the Browne's came.John died in 1617 and his gravestone in the old Leckpatrick Graveyard near Strabane is among the oldest marked and decipherable graves in Ireland.
My fellow researchers and I have established our links to the Strabane area and are very anxious to clarify our relationships to the McGhees of that time.If anyone recognizes Catharine Browne I would be delighted to hear from them and to share further information.Bill
