Lt. Courtney Browne who served in the British 52nd Foot
Looking for ancestors & siblings of Courtney W. Browne (b. 1782) who married Mary Swanton 9 June 1805 in Kilmeen, Cork, Ireland.
He purchased an ensigns commission in the North York Militia on 20 March 1804, promoted to lieutenant 4 Dec 1807. Transferred to regular army (52nd Regiment of Foot) 27 Apt 1809. Promoted to Lieutenant 3 Jan 1811. He was stationed in Cork, Ireland during the Peninsula Wars as a recruiter.
I have confirmed his military service, but have been unable to find where he originates from & who his family was.Hard to imagine a Irish boy going to Yorkshire to enlist in the militia, so my current hypothesis is that his family hailed from Yorkshire & and that he settled in Ireland where his wife was from.
Any help would be appreciated!
