I am a ggggrandson of Lazarus John Bryars.Lazarus was in Alabama prior to 1813.He was one of only a few survivors of the Creek Indian massacre of Fort Mims in Baldwin County, Alabama.A book, about a James Smith and the massacre, was written by a Dr. Mason from Stockton. Dr. Mason's wife, who was a Smith, was noted in the book as being a descendent of Lazarus and, although not stated in the book directly, may also be related to the James Smith that the author writes about. Lazarus had two sons by Smith, Green Berry Bryars and Red Berry Bryars.I am descended from Green Berry.Green Berry was murdered by the Hadley's of the Stockton area over who owned certain sheep that Greenberry possessed. The murder trial and subsequent law suit against the Hadley's is well documented in the Alabama archives and law books.
An historian told me that Lazarus was a home builder and built houses for the pioneers who settled in southwest Alabama. I have since lost an E-mail from someone in Virginia who happened to have information from a Bryars Family Bible. Lazarus was listed in that book with his brothers and sisters and each of their Godparents.Oddly, each person listed had Godparents with French names.
If you have any additional information, I would love to hear from you.
