Re: James Buchanan, Quebec, 1820~1830
Hi Rebecca, (and Bobbie, who I think is my cousin).I have a small bit of further information about both James Buchanan and about Dr. Robert Ambrose Buchanan, his second son.
About Robert:he m. Netta M. Fresh in abt 1899; they had four children--Edyth N, b 15 Jan 1890; Floyd, b 20 Jun 1891; Reba M. b 9 Nov 1893; and Robert Ambrose II, b 23 May 1902.Netta was the informant on the death certificate when Robert's older brother Phillip died of tuberculosis in 1906 in Healdsburg, CA, so they were living out there by that point.
James and Alma had at least 4 children:Phillip Merrill (my maternal ggrandfather) b 8 May 1864, Robert, David Royal, b 4 Apr 1870, d 1873; and Andrew J, b 27 Jan 1877.So far as I know, all four boys were born in Sutton, Brome Co, Quebec.James and Alma are listed there in the 1881 Canada census.James is listed as a farmer, age 42, and Alma as age 44.That puts James' birth year as approximately 1839.James is listed as being of Irish descent and Alma of Scottish descent, and the family are all listed as Seventh-day Adventist.
We probably have the same book on the Cross family; I also have James as the older brother of Margaret Jane, b 25 Jan 1846; I know of her only because she is listed as marrying the older brother, Amos Almon, of the Alma Cross who married James. The Bordoville area of Vermont where the Crosses lived and the Sutton, Quebec area are less than 5 miles apart; and the Buchanans, if they were Irish, were Scotch-Irish for sure; so both families may have been part of a Scottish extended enclave in that area.
If anyone passes on any other information about James' ancestry, would you please email and let me know?I have been unable to find anything else.
By the way, I have the death date for Robert Ambrose as 25 Oct 1943.Are you a descendant of his?
