Re: Lewis A Burdett/Burdette WV family names
1. John Burdett age 87 died May 9, 1882, "parents J. and H. Burdett" was born May 29 1795 to Giles (or Jiles as it was sometimes spelled)and Sarah Dunbar. (The "H" is problematic but could be someone's misreading of a script "S" for a script "H".)
2. I do not have a record of a Margaret Swope married to a John Burdett as you indicated. The only Margaret Swope I have married Joseph Skaggs in Monroe County 30 July 1808.Can you please give me your Margaret Swope/John Burdett reference?
3. You have probably come across the land record for the first piece of land acquired in Greenbrier/Monroe Counties by William Burdett, Sr., born abt 1755.That was 50 acres on Swoppes Knobbe acquired in 1798.It was there William's eldest son, John, met and subsequently married Eleanore Swope.William, Sr. later relocated to Wolf Creek where in 1818 after the death of his first wife he remarried and in his sixties did, indeed, sire three more children. While unusual, becoming a father at age sixty is not impossible.(In more recent times this has been accomplished by people such as Bing Crosby.)
4. In fact I believe there were quite a few John Burdett's in Greenbrier/Monroe Counties in the late 1700's-early 1800's. There was John Burdett, Sr. who came with his wife Elizabeth and their children from Fauquier County, VA in the 1790's.John, Sr. had a son John, Jr. and at least four grandchildren named John Burdett (that is, the son of Giles Burdett and Sarah Dunbar, the son of William Burdett, Sr. and Sarah Cornwell, the John Burdett who married Jane Walker in Monroe County 9 Aug. 1828 and your John Burdett who married Elizabeth____.)Even though I do not show a John Burdett in either of these familes, your John Burdett may have been the son of either Archibald Burdett and Maragret Constantine or Charles Burdett and Elizabeth Legg.
