Cool, I had thought of the Roman possibility, especially since three SSA haplogroups were found in Britain around Wales and the former Hadrians Wall region, A, B, and E1b1b. E1b1b being the more frequent of the three, A the second was found in some Yorkshiremen, B very very rare. Some attribute the latter two, B and A, to be from the earliest stages of the Transatlantic Slave Trade meaning, the early 1600's later 1500's, so Achilles B ancestor could have been a freed slave on British soil, and had admixture with the native British population within the 100-200 years before arrival on American soil, so there is significant time for the physical traits and the over all identity to have become British.
via the 23andMe testing you can not only find your haplogroups but what your admixture percentages are, for instance you have an individual that is Haplogroup E1b1b, but due to hundreds of years of residing amongst the European populous and blending in, he becomes perhaps 99% identical to the native population, the only remnant of the non British blood being the paternal E marker.
Similar cases appear amongst the modern day Melungeons, they may be paternally Europid or Amerindian, but on the full analysis come up as 90% European, 5% Amerindian, 5% African, or 50% African, 10% Amerindian, 40% European, etc...
I personally am saving up for the full 23andMe test spiel, would be interesting to find out more than just one paternal or maternal line, this could prove or disprove whole entire genealogies, multiple branches rather than just one or two.
I also am waiting for SMGF to publish my samples, mtDNA, YDNA, and Autosomal, and I will then be able to purchase them through genetree for a very reduced cost. My YDNA will be separate than that of Achilles, since my paternal line is Reeder/Reader, we may have a possible connection with a line from Norfolk that descends from the Danes.
