At the moment, I believe that the Thomas Burnhams are related as follows:
Thomas the Immigrant - born about 1620 and is likely the Lt. Thomas Burnham who died in June 1694. His widow, Mary Lawrence, was born 10 Apr 1625 at St. Albans, Herts, England and is the widow Mary who die 27 Mar 1715, aged about 92.
Thomas, born 1646 is the son of Thomas the Immigrant. He married (1) Lydia Pengry in 1665. She died about 1688 and Thomas married (2) Mrs. Esther Cogswell Bishop. In digging further on the Cogswell family, I found information posted (undocumented) that the family of William Cogswell and wife Susanna Hawkes included Hester/Esther born abt. 1655, based on a 1675 marriage. She married Samuel (not Stephen) Bishop on 10 Aug 1675 at Ipswich. I did find this marriage listed at FamilySearch.org in the Mass. marriages collection. Hester reportedly had a brother, John, born 1666 who died in 1710. I also found in the Mass. vital records before 1850 one John Cogswell who died 13 Mar 1710 aged 44. John's reported wife (no marriage record yet found) was one Hannah Goodhue. Ipswich records show Hannah Goodhue was born 4 July 1673 to William and Hannah Dane Goodhue.
I believe that Thomas born 1646 married Hester/Esther Bishop
after Lydia died. With a birthdate around 1655, Esther's age would be a good match for a second wife and she would have still been of child bearing age in the 1690's.
Thomas who died 21 Feb 1728, aged about 88 is probably this Thomas. He may have married a 3rd time to Susanna, who is the lady who died 27 May 1728, wife of Thomas. She may have been a widow when they married and there is no record of any children being born to this couple. In fact, the only place where Susanna's name appears as Susanna Burnham is on her death record.
Hannah Cogswell is not listed as "Mrs." in her 1712 marriage record, but Thomas is listed as Thomas Jr. Thomas the Immigrant had died in 1694. Thomas born in 1646 was the senior Thomas by age in 1712. His son born in 1666 would have been known as "Thomas Jr." I also believe that this Hannah is the widow of John Cogswell and is the Hannah Goodhue born in 1673. At the moment, I also believe that this Thomas and Hannah are the parents of my Hannah Burnham, born about 1716 and who married Isaac Parsons. Sgt. Thomas of Chebacco who died 16 Dec 1748 was probably Thomas born in 1666.
Thomas the son of James, born 27 Jan 1681, is the last Thomas in the records. The Thomas who died 31 Mar 1742, aged about 56 years is probably this man. If he married, no record has been found.
Thomas who married Mrs. Priscilla Appleton was the son of Thomas born 1666 and Esther Cogswell Bishop. I realize that this gives Thomas born 1666 two living sons with the same given first name. While this is unusual, I actually have documented cases in a couple other of my family lines where one man had two surviving sons with the same first names, but the sons had half siblings with different mothers.
This Thomas died in 1730 and the death record matches his birthdate exactly.
Thomas and Margaret Boarmans/Boardman is the next family. This Thomas, I think, was the son of John Burnham and Elizabeth Wells. Thomas and Margaret had at least five children and two were named John and Elizabeth. This Thomas was born 22 Sept 1673 and died 9 May 1759, aged about 77. Margaret died two months earlier on 10 Mar 1759 and is listed as the wife of Thomas. She was about 78 when she died.
Thoughts, comments or another interpretation from anyone?? Please help solve the mystery.
