Re: Robert Burton
YES and this Robert and his son are mentioned often in the records in the Wilkes, Ashe, Watauga Co., NC, and Union Co., TN courthouse records. Both are mentioned in a number of local history books of the area that I have seen and read, but no real details on the wives or children.
From my most recent trip into Grayson, and my visit with Mastin Osborne, IF the BURTON's that our Jane and Charity come from are in the area of NC along the NEW and the State Line, then they must have been located west of Cox's Chapel, for according to Mastin, the land along the NEW from Cox's Chapel area, south and east towards Sparta and Peach Bottom Mt. was all Cox and Osborne land. NO BURTON's in that area, to best of his "sharp" memory!!
From my own riding of a horse, if you have a good strong one, you can do, without a full run, ride abt. 10-13 miles in an hour. Alex. Trent would not have had much riding fast if he had a day and night and the next day with a female with him!! By the current roads in the area, to go from BURTON's Chapel at the foot of Iron Mt. in north Grayson Co., VA thru FOX over the NEW and to Cox's Chapel, would even today not be more then 20-25 miles, along either road that pretty much parallels both Fox & Bridle Creek. So a day, a night, the next day would mean one did not have far to ride.
NOW the question would be "WHERE did Alex. come from to get Jane, how long did that take, and how long did it take to get her back to whereever he came from, based on where John S. Wells would have been!!! This has to be the record of a whole bunch folks who just did not own land, and were not on the local records, but why??
