This sounds like the famous "Brushy" Bush who is refered to as Lewis Bush in all the books but the newspapers called Amos Bush. This happened near Liberal KANSAS about 3 miles south at a little unincorporated spot just over the Oklahoma Line, called Beer City. This was while No Man's Land, the Oklahoma panhandle, had no laws and no civil government. Because of the nearby Hay Meadow Massacre which happened in the same month, July, 1888. Several states petitioned the Federal Government to establish law and the area was attached to the Federal Court of The Eastern District of Texas at Paris, Texas. The law allowed for retroactive prosecution of crimes so an investigator was assigned the case and a John Brennan was arrested about June of 1889. The records of the court were all destroyed in a fire.
